Not sure if this was already mentioned, but it would seem as if the three principal cities of South Carolina (Greenville, Columbia & Charleston) are competing with each other. Their populations are all very similar.
The same could be said about Mobile, Birmingham and Huntsville with Montgomery most definitely on the back burner.

New York features a rivalry (more like a subdued war) between upstate and the New York City metropolitan area. But it doesn't shock anyone around here, mainly because it's been going on for nearly 300 years.

Not on the streets and in the GA penal system though. In the prisons they can't even put Atlanta and Savannah dudes on the same pods because the violence is going to pop off. It's usually Atlanta and Macon vs Savannnah, Augusta, Brunswick, and Albany. The drama will pop off. Not a question of if, but when. They call us uppity and soft city folks, and we call them geechie and bama mop heads. And if you're from Atlanta and go down to the hood areas of Savannah they will go out of their way to mess with you, and when they come up here Atlanta dudes go out of there way to mess them. Low Country and Upland GA do not get along. Two totally different cultures, dudes in Savannah dont even act or sound like us.

New Jersey has a tremendous rivalry with New York City. And it should not be that way, if one considers that 3/4 of the NJ population make their living in NYC.

Fred, but I think it is more that NY State people have a problem with NYC, more than anything else.

Every single state has city rivalries in it. Every state has multiple towns and cities, a lot of whom compete with each other.
It's not even necessarily the two largest that may compete either. The smaller ones could compete vs. bigger ones, the smaller ones vs. each other, etc.
In California, aside from the commonly touted "LA vs. SF" rivalry (Some Angelenos contend its one way, but then again, they're the ones who usually bring it up first, which makes no sense if its one way), there's
SD vs. LA
SF vs. Oakland vs. San Jose
LA vs. OC
LA/OC vs. Inland Empire
Fresno vs. Bakersfield
Coastal California vs. Inland California
And a litany of others I probably forgot. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Redding and Red Bluff had a rivalry to see who produces the best tweakers, or somewhere like Trona and Blythe for the hottest, most isolated place ever.
See what I mean? Think outside the box.
NOTE: I still take SO much pleasure whenever the SF Giants lose. It's a Dodger fan thing!

Missouri has KC vs. STL, but it is a rivalry that only they care about. for Rural Missouri, it is usually the Ozarks vs. Everyone else, while no one pays attention to the bootheel or far northern MO.

People sometimes try to make a rivalry out of Phoenix and Tucson.
