I work in healthcare, I'm looking for a city ~500k+ in population (with metro area a few million). Salem and Boise are a bit small, and a bit of a complication is that I do own a vehicle that I owe enough money on that I'll be holding onto it a few years yet - which makes Boston difficult, though not impossible.

Charlotte? Nashville? Indianapolis? Columbus? Good middle american cities in that size range that seem to be doing fairly well economically. Two more southern in culture of course but all within a decent drive of each other so not as far off culturally as one might think.
