PA seems to have its own style of BBQ (at least Central PA). Chopped up pickles in pulled pork. Not a fan

Almost as bad as Memphis BBQ: Cole slaw shoved inside a BBQ pork sandwich.

North vs South---The deciding factors:
Is breakfast served with grits or home fries? When ordering a glass of half-n-half to you get iced-tea or a dairy product?
Does your server look confused when you ask for hush Puppies?

I agree cuisine is a component of culture.. but geography, history, & demographics are more substantial factors.
Geographically- DC, Baltimore, & Northern VA are all within the geographic South (below the Mason-Dixon, located within Old South colonies).
Demographically- They're within the American Black Belt, consistent with other areas of the Southeast that have deeply rooted, large Black populations. (NoVa less so than DC & Baltimore).
Historical- Virginia was arguably the most important state in the Confederacy, Baltimore was in a slave-holding Southern state that didn't secede, but was not culturally Northern. DC was also a slave-holding & slave auctioning town, even as Lincoln was inaugurated.

^ For those objective reasons I view all 3 as within the South, although transplanted govt workers are changing the cultural landscape of NoVa.. to subjectively draw new, competing Mason-Dixon lines thru contemporary VA, ignores hundreds of years of American history. A culture is defined by more than just it's most recent decade.

If you ever read trucking trade magazines the Midwest states are grouped as the North Central region. I think that (North Central) is a more accurate term than the Midwest.

Maryland and Virginia are probably the best toss up states since they both were huge slave ports and big battle states during the Civil War. Most people would consider Maryland the North because of the Balt-Wash corridor. Virginia it's about half and half because of most of Virginians live in the Nova but geographically it blends in with the rest south. It has costal plans, piedmont and the mountains, similar to North Carolina's geography. The size between VA and NC are also very simlar.

I'm still confused about that post though. I can get hush puppies all over around here and I live in NY.

They're supposed to be southern?

For that matter I can get grits at certain places too.
