Let's delineate the North-South border once and for all.

This is PURELY cultural. In other words, if you want to pull open a map from 1865 and use that as the only reason for choosing an option, don't.

If you can't fathom a city being north or south, leave it blank. (aka, if you think Kansas City is Western, leave it blank).

This is a great idea for a poll. I am very curious to what the results will be.

The trickiest choices for me were Cairo, Northern Virginia, and Charleston, West Virginia. All the others were easy to choose.

Pittsburgh, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Wilmington are all Northern to me. Louisville I picked Southern. The tricky places I also placed in the South.

How is St Louis Northern? It's known for BBQ and Blues. That's Southern

Some of these cities are midwestern. It may seem odd, but I think of North as being synonymous with Northeastern.

Why is Pittsburgh even mentioned as being Southern?

St. Louis is an interesting one. I think of it as a 'confluence' city where three regions (North, West, South) come together and create a cultural overlap. There's a reason the Gateway Arch was placed there.

That is a good question, its the same latitude as NYC, and has no significant southern culture to speak of.

I don't really get Northern Virginia being almost tied (with Southern inching ahead). It's so heavily influenced by DC and is the lower point of the Northeast Corridor. While it may be in a southern state, it's culturally northern IMO because it's a part of the NE Corridor.

I actually think that NOVA can't be anything else but tied. It has clear influence from both regions and a lot of people consider it to be the southernmost area of the NE or the northernmost area of the south. I think the poll results being tied reflect the reality of NOVA on the ground.
