Social Conservativism is fine if it's combined with a Live and Let Live attitude but if the government plays an active role in enforcing it, we have a problem.
Upstate NY? Lots of regulation (not sure if it's because the majority of the people there necessarily want it though) and there are many instances where nothing has changed since the 80s. Hairstyles, mentalities, you name it.

A lot of this will vary depending on the location. It still has Ithaca and many colleges, as well as cities that still attract people from different parts of the country and even world.
This is a pretty tough topic, because these things don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

This place is like a de-facto theocracy. I can't really think of anywhere else that's as oppressively right-wing and where the church still has so much power in 2018 as Oklahoma.

This seems right, along with many other parts of the south. Regulation is okay as long as it adheres to strict Christian values.

Yeah Oklahoma is pretty much the South on steroids. It makes much of the upper South actually look liberal. Every right-wing religious authoritarian box is checked.
Utah. It's the closest to a theocracy you'll get in the USA. The Mormon church is in control.
I would say Utah and Oklahoma are very similar in this regard. In Utah it’s the Mormon church and in Oklahoma it’s the Baptist church. The Mormons at least place a higher value on education than the Baptists.
