That would be a pretty meaningless stat just because local government structures vary widely by state.

So while MA every inch is incorporated in places like Georgia there are vast tracks of unincorporated land.

So a place like Westfield, Mass which is 43sq miles would likely be a 10sq Miles town in GA with the surrounding countryside being unincorpated Hampden County.

I would think just add up the total population of all the cities in each state over 50,000 people and divide that amount by the total number of cities in that state that you added up.

You don't have to do 50,000. You could choose all cities over 5,000 population, or all cities over 10,000 population, or whatever population that will suit you best for what you're trying to find out.

this is a good method... but then i would have to do maths in order to get the size by factoring each cities population density.

is there a list of all the cities and towns in each state ?

wikipedia seems to be non-comprehensive:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catego...tates_by_state

Look at the index of the most recent edition of a Rand McNally Road Atlas. You'll find all the cities and towns in each state along with their population.

You do know that city-data has lists like that, right? City-data is not just a forum.

Go here:
http://www.city-data.com/

Click the state you want, say, Indiana:
http://www.city-data.com/city/Indiana.html

The default is a list of all cities over 6,000 along with their populations. But you can also choose all cities, or cities between 1,000-6,000, or all cities under 1,000.

There's confusion here. Perhaps, OP, (and the rest of us) should use "area" instead of size when referencing the physical area of a municipality, and "population" instead of "size" when referencing the number of people there. I too mostly think of population when someone talks about the size of a city, but it is true that either population or area could be meant.
