Default Starting a new life in a new city

I am a black female with two young children. I am looking for a safe city that I don't have to see rebel flags flying! I can move anywhere in the U.S. We are starting over after having a very bad go of things. I want somewhere pretty, somewhat inexpensive, and family friendly. Can you help!

The midwest maybe? Generally inexpensive, with a nice landscape, but rough weather.

St. Louis is nice. Parts of the area have crime, but (from my understanding) it's generally safe. And the city is pretty diverse, 51% black and 43% white. Most the suburbs are majority white though (not sure if you would like to live in an area with a higher black population or if it even matters). And St. Louis is generally inexpensive. There are also museums, the zoo, ball games, and generally things for kids to do.

Chicago is great as well, but more expensive.

Milwaukee might be nice, too, but obviously colder than the other two. How much does climate matter?

For many a Rebel Flag just means they love where they come from. Oh well good luck.

Let's not start a debate in here.

Inexpensive and family friendly have the midwest written all over it. Try anywhere like MN, ND, SD, NE, IA, etc. Also try Colorado, Arizona, and Washington State. You might like those places. Do you have any weather preferences? Size preferences?
