Hey guys. My family will be moving out of our hot Orlando neighborhood soon and are looking for a place to "retire" too. Use that word retire lightly because they are both in their late 50s. They are both looking for places north of South Carolina to be closer to family in the Northeast. With a tight budget of $150k and a desire to be near a beachy and urban setting... what area would be the best to look at?

Wish List
-Very Important to be near shopping, restaurants, and activity. Just walkable to lively areas. Nothing too much of a dud.
-Beach preferably within 45 minutes of a drive.
-Cold Weather is NOT a bothersome, looking for recommendations from South Carolina to New Jersey to Massachusetts... anywhere up the coast would be fine.
-Near a decent size airport, with American Airlines service (They work for company, and fly for free on them)
-Has to be on East Coast.

Budget: We are looking for a market that will be possible to find homes UNDER 150k.

Areas We Have Been Looking:
Virginia Beach, Virginia: Meets most of the criteria
Myrtle Beach, SC: Meets half, just a bit too 'retired'

Any other places that you can shout out within the wish list and budget that we could be looking over?

To be honest, even in Virginia Beach, $150K isn’t much of a budget.

Perhaps a place like Greenville NC, which is home to East Carolina University, is likely one of the best bets in terms of a coastal or near coastal area that fits the criteria.

Newark DE, another college town, is another place to look and Delaware is actually a state that is somewhat popular with Northeastern retirees due to tax reasons.

Southern Delaware is apparently becoming a mecca for retirees. A lot of 'lifestyle communities' are popping up in the area.

I would recommend the Savannah/Hilton Head Island area which straddles the GA/SC border. There's quite a bit in their price range plus American Airlines serves both Savannah and Hilton Head.

Budget for 150k, keep in mind we do not want a house bigger than 1,700 square feet (Smaller, less to maintain lol), and about 2/3 bedrooms. Nothing extravagant.

@ckhthankgod, yeah if it is on the East Coast and is appealing. why not?

I infer that the OP wants to get above the Gnat Line.

Some friends of mine in Atlanta researched a retirement destination for about two years. Their requirements were a $200K budget, a location reasonably close to relatives on Long Island, beach accessibility, new construction and no resemblance to Florida whatsoever.
Millsboro, DE met them with flying colors; construction begins in September.

This area of Rochester NY next to Lake Ontario comes to mind: Charlotte CCA | Welcome to Charlotte

Closer to MA and is a smaller city close to a lake beach and mountains(about 45 minutes from an airport): Glens Falls is full of things to do, delicious restaurants, and numerous places to shop for everyone in your family or friends.
