A few short years ago, San Francisco was frequently mentioned alongside Portland, Seattle, and Austin as one of the most sought-after cities for Millennials and one of the meccas of hipster culture. Today however all you hear about is the homeless problem, increasing filth, and the cost of living driving people out. San Francisco doesn't seem to have the allure now that it did in 2015 for young people looking to "move to the big city." I've heard less about Portland and to an extent Seattle as well. Austin is still going strong as is Denver. It also seems like Nashville and Columbus are rising stars when it comes to Millennial culture.
So is San Francisco still one of the most sought after cities for Millennials starting out? What about Portland and Seattle? What cities do you think are rising stars in this category?
When it gets to the point that you're forced to share closets with roommates 1 hour away from the actual city, any place would lose its luster quickly.

Is this going to be all anecdotal or is there a recent, millennial-specific scientific poll about preferences somewhere?
(Not migration trends...that's juuust a little dominated by price when you get to SF and so on.)
Everything I've read about San Francisco recently has been about how people are leaving because it's become too expensive. Also, the homeless problem is getting a little out of control.
The places people "want" or "like" are very different than the places they move to when reality sets in. I bet San Francisco would do extremely well in the former, even while its growing more slowly due to the latter. The "luster" isn't diminished by people leaving or not arriving due to price.
Same with anywhere. An idyllic small town (if well-known) might do well in the former but do poorly once people consider the lack of jobs, the difficulty of getting anywhere by air, and so on.
I think many simply can't afford the city, but tech comoanies love SF so I don't see the growth dwindling at all. The city is booming!!
