I say Baltimore isn't southern, but what do I know? I was just born as raised here...

I'm glad that Memphis is getting some love. It is a great city, overall. Memphis has a great vibe. I used to get off of work and get on Sam Cooper before going home. This, despite the fact that I lived five minutes from work. I'd listen to Roy Ayers while driving. The feel and look of Memphis w/ Mystic Voyage in the background, is better than any mind altering drug. Midtown is walkable. If downtown is your thing; downtown Memphis is live. The humidity during the summer can range from a mild 40% to the dreadful 100%. Relatively cheap to live. The people are very nice. Although, they can be down on themselves, which is a turn off. In fact, this negative attitude is my biggest knock against Memphis.

I learned the expression, "I appreciate you," in Memphis. I've been using it since. I was at my cousin's house on a Sunday afternoon. She kept receiving knocks on her door. The people never came in the front room with the rest of us. I found out later; it was her turn to cook for the church members on her block! They came to the kitchen, prepared a plate, exchanged pleasantries, and left. WOW!

I love Easy Way! Very identifiable red/ orange buildings. Specialty: fresh produce and caramel cakes!

Yes, the crime is high. However, I have NEVER been a victim of a violent crime. My wife hated my habit of going to Schnucks or the Kroger at night. I work the night shift, btw. Never was I bothered. For sure, there are always a few people on Union Ave.: the Schnucks location and Poplar and Cleveland Ave.: the Kroger location, at that time of night.

Wow, I am longing to visit Memphis. I wonder if Dach Oriental Imports on Summer Ave is still open. Papa Dach wanted to close the place. Nothing doing with Mama Dach. I used to hang out at Dachs and help people decide which martial arts flick to rent or buy. I miss those discussions!

Does Memphis still have Markova Reed and Ursula Madden? Two of the FINEST reasons to watch the local news!

I apologize for the long post. I got a bit nostalgic there!

Wow! This thread is old. Boy did I get caught up. Oh well.

Best is subjective. Memphis is my favorite southern city. I live in Atlanta, btw.

My favorite large southern cities (metro pop over 1 million): New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Tampa/St. Pete, Austin, Miami

My favorite small southern cities: Charleston (SC), Key West (FL), Auburn (AL), Savannah (GA), Charlottesville (VA), Chapel Hill (NC), Athens (GA), Greenville (SC)

I don't consider DC or Baltimore southern. If you do, that is great.

I would probably recommend Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Nashville, or Houston.

Richmond, VA...It's got it all, IMO
-History (Confederate White House)
-Proximity to water while being far enough way to not get hit hard by hurricanes
-Good BBQ
-Warm summers and mild-ish winters
-Good schools
-Great Nascar track
