Outside of the Bay Bridge I haven’t heard of any of the bridges listed.

How about the Royal Gorge bridge? It’s the highest suspension bridge in the US, but again, outside of bridge geeks I doubt many have heard of it.

I've heard of it, I've heard of it, and I'm not even a bridge geek! But to be honest, I hadn't heard of it till I was near it and decided to go check it out. It's pretty awesome.

I love these bridges, but I'm not sure if they qualify for the "top five:"

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway (longest continuous bridge over water in the world, at nearly 24 miles long)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_P...train_Causeway

Hampton Roads Bridge/Tunnel
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampto...E2%80%93Tunnel

Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado

New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_Gorge_Bridge

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland - often considered the scariest bridge in the US
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_Bay_Bridge

And the winner - which I do think deserves to be in the top five - the Old North Bridge in Concord, MA - the site of the first battle of the American Revolution!

George Washington Bridge.

Although I'd say it's more notorious than famous.

Of the 6 bridges you've named, I've been to all except the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. They're all amazing in their own ways, but I agree with you that they probably don't rank in the top 5 "most famous." Old North Bridge is famous with those who know some history, but among the general population? Not so sure.

Incidentally, if you want a scary bridge in Maryland, I've got one that is so much more wheel-grippingly terrifying than the Bay Bridge could ever hope to be: the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Govern...Johnson_Bridge

It doesn't look so bad in the picture, but up close it's a different story: narrow lanes (only 2 of them, 1 in each direction), no shoulders, sharp curves, and low barriers give one the ominous sense that there is absolutely no margin for error; if that oncoming truck drifts even a foot over the line, you're either having a head-on collision or going over the side.

Most of these are in the category of sorta well known. I haven't seen any here that are even a large fraction of the BB/GGB level.

It was at one time the longest main-span suspension bridge until the Golden Gate was built.

Now its claim to fame is that it handles the most heavily-traveled motor vehicle bridge in the world.
