Relative to population size & overall role/ presence within the US, with no real "big cities" per se,
North Carolina forum on this site has a disproportionate amount of activity
119,600 threads!! vs:
California- 87,000 threads
Illinois- 28,600 threads
New York- 80,400 threads
Only Texas pulls more threads on the state forums but that is..Texas
Anyone enlighten me...I know NC has kinda been an "It" state lately (i haven't personally been)...or did this site originate in NC??!
I'm sure there are many reasons. Posters tell their friends about it, people are attracted to the a forum where they can get useful info, etc. Part of it has to do with the number of people who come to city-data because they're considering where/if they might move after retirement. NC is a top retirement destination, but also a place many people don't know a lot about. So they come to the forums to learn.
As for CD, I believe it started somewhere in the midwest. Chicago, maybe? Not sure, but not NC.

Apparently you haven't been...otherwise you would have been overwhelmed by the number of yankees and halfbacks living in NC and neighboring states like SC and TN.
North Carolina is the best of the rest I like to say. California is tops for lots of categories and Texas is so freaking large and the economy like California is in a league of it's own, New York and Florida have huge draws for obvious reasons. I think North Carolina is a very romanticized state for the following reasons: Moderate weather, diverse population by southern standards, lot of military bases so people even overseas have heard of North Carolina moreso than some other places. tons of public and private universities, and a couple high end medical centers, Charlotte is huge on banking and Raleigh/Durham is very smart but without being pretentious and Chapel Hill is one of the coolest college towns in the country (In the top 10 of people with Phd's in the country and is huge in IT and biopharma) They have the tallest mountains on the east coast. Nice coastlines tallest lighthouse. Great and diverse economy the cities are comfortable sizes and don't have the drawbacks of the truly large cities yet.
NC is almost always option when people get ready to leave colder, or more expensive places and is well placed on the east cost in between the northern cities and the deep south so I think that is why it searched so often. Whether or not people actually move there is another thing. But simply stated there is a lot of of good and very little bad.
I'm originally from Raleigh and NC is indeed special. I ran into an older couple a few days ago in Denver and when I mentioned where I was from the husband perked up and said "I love your state". (And that's coming from a Coloradan which is saying a lot as Colorado is fondly thought of as well)
My experiences in NC seem to indicate that, more than most other places, NC - particularly in its cities - has more "booster" types than just about anywhere else.
Judging from the Triangle threads (also a Raleigh native!), there seem to be a lot of queries from New Yorkers looking to relocate to NC, and Census figures bear this out. The site also has an excellent Google PageRank; it comes up fifth in a search for "relocate to Raleigh."

It didn't originate, but it was one of the early popular forums.
Also a lot of people don't realize that the 'city data' pertains to relocation information more than city to city comparisons.
I think it just has to do with CD members having more activity in that area. On a national scale NC is #1 in next to nothing so I doubt it has to do with anything relative to NC draws over other states.
