Keep in mind that the original post is looking for metro areas under 500,000. So, this is in regards to mid sized/smaller metros.

A few other things in the area, a new performing arts center scheduled in Johnson City fro 2019. I thought a lot of smaller metros offered these sorts of things. Now if we could just get a good art museum in the area!

Santa Fe has both an opera company and a symphony....
with less than 100,000 population.

Based on the responses in this thread, I'd say it's not all that unusual for smaller and mid-sized cities to have an array of performing arts offerings.

Some of the areas mentioned are over the metro population criteria, but some arenít.
