It depends upon your orientation. For a singer-songwriter right now I would say Nashville, and it's not just country either. Rock and Metal would include cities like Chicago, Cleveland and Minneapolis. If strictly a musician (non-vocalist) cities like NYC, Boston, LA and SF offer a lot of varied opportunities. If more cutting edge smaller markets like Athens GA or Carrboro NC have a proven track record of turning out national talent. There are so many other options as well depending upon the genre you're most attracted to.

Minneapolis has a pretty large and diverse music scene, actually. The indie rock and folk music scenes are probably the biggest at the moment, though historically the "Minneapolis Sound" cranked out dozens of artists like Prince, Jimmy Jam, Sheila E., etc. and then moved on to more punk and alternative rock bands like Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, Babes in Toyland, Soul Asylum, the Jayhawks, Semisonic, etc. I don't think of the Twin Cities as having much of a metal scene.
These days the Twin Cities has one of the better underground hip-hop scenes in the country.
Does any US city these days have any real metal scene? There isn't anywhere like the Bay Area thrash metal of 80s or the Tampa Bay death metal scene of the 90s. Even those scenes were nearly underground. There isn't one metro I can even think of where it is super outstanding. All of the big metal acts these days tour the major metros around the country.
I always imagined metal being more of a thing in Europe.

well where I live there is a substantial amount of metal (local metal) shows but they tend to be more of the death, thrash and black variety.... I am not sure how big of a group would be a "scene" but there are definitely metal bands in the Mid Missouri area that do metal...…
As far as anything else for say in Columbia, MO I don't know or follow too much. I usually have to drive to St Louis or KC for any big shows (even if they are in a club!)
