I found a 2700 sq ft 2 story home on 2 acres in a small town. Hardwood floors throughout, attic, basement. 9.5' ceilings, 3 fireplaces, metal roof, steel I beams in the basement ....$90K. Sure I was lucky, but deals like that are out there.

I'm jealous Gemstone. Virginia is a beautiful state. So is your neighbor North Carolina.

OP check out Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Pretty suburb of Tulsa. Very, very low crime and lots of 3/2 houses in your price range. This part of Oklahoma is very pastoral, rolling hills, green all spring summer and fall. It can get a light snow some winters, but it doesn't stay around long. Summers are hot. Your husband should be able to get plenty of work.

Here's some available houses in Broken Bow and they all have running water, electricity, and even indoor toilets too (I'm looking at you Leona).
503 W Richmond St, Broken Arrow, OK 74012 | MLS #1838569 | Zillow

11427 E 62nd Pl, Broken Arrow, OK 74012 | MLS #1845410 | Zillow

800 W Birmingham St, Broken Arrow, OK 74011 | MLS #1900023 | Zillow

1616 S 4th St, Broken Arrow, OK 74012 | MLS #1826222 | Zillow

Jeez, I meant Broken Arrow...not Broken Bow. Broken Bow is real high crime. Broken Bow is prettier than Broken Arrow though.

Thank you for all your input ladies and gentlemen. He has decided that we are going to stay away from heavy snow and ice. We are still looking for 4 seasons if possible without heavy snow and blizzards. If we can't find that we'll just stick to the west coast and get use to the rain. We definitely can not stay in San Luis Obispo County the cost of living just keeps going up.
