Buffalo does not meet your definion of "major MSA" although the 3M number can be met within the 75 mile driving radius:
<75 miles - Niagara Falls NY/ON, Niagara Gorge, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario shores, Chautauqua, Niagara-on-the-Lake, WNY ski country, Hamilton ON, Western Finger Lakes, Allegheny National Forest, Letchworth State Park, Rochester
<150 miles - Toronto, Lake Simcoe, Watkins Glen, Corning, Finger Lakes
<250 miles - Thousand Islands, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit

Wow, Buffalo is closer to Detroit than Albany. Never would have thought that.

I went to Buffalo (to see the stunning City Hall) and Niagara Falls this summer and I met a couple from Akron who told me they drove 4 hours from Ohio to get to Niagara. I think of Ohio and New York being far apart. That blew my mind also.

When did 75 miles become a day trip? That's a commute for some people I know lol. IMO a day trip should be places you can get to within 2-3hrs drive. But then I like driving so I'm probably not a good judge of what the typical person would consider a day trip. I also know people who can barely summon the emotions to drive cross town here in GR

I think some of this depends on the traffic

DC for example can be as quick as two hours from Philly or as long as 4-5 on heavy traffic times (which actually the 5 hours is usually weekends when it happens)

so maybe is perspective

I also agree that 150 miles and be pretty simple if doing 80 the whole time; once you get over three hours its a different animal, stops for gas, food etc and even at 3 6 hours total in a day is taxing in ways for a single day trip

All of Ontario <75 miles from Detroit is ugly farm towns, like Leamington, or Windsor, which isn't anything special.

To the north is ugly Flint and nothing else.

To the west there's Lansing I suppose, but that's not within 75 miles.

I don't see anything of note.

Michigan is beautiful, yes, but in the North and West, not the South and East (which is topographically boring like most of Ohio or Indiana).
Man, I lived in southeast Michigan for a couple years before moving back to Aus, you don't know what you're talking about. The region is surrounded by lakes and wetlands on all sides there's tons of beautiful rural scenery and hilly lands cute old small towns and metro parks, especially nice in the fall. And did you just call Windsor a farm town?

Just came to say that Michigan is extremely beautiful and doesn't belong anywhere near the bottom of this list.

Miami is nice. Can make it to Orlando driving or the west coast beach towns like Sanibel and Marco Island - can also make it very quickly (by boat or puddle jumper plane) to Bimini, Bahamas, Florida Keys. Cruise ship port is here so can do a last minute 3 day weekend trip with no planning.

Also, day trips to the Everglades, on a boat, and generally your choice of many different beach scenes. Weekend trips to Key West, Orlando, Tampa Bay, & Daytona.
