I'm dividing the US (arbitrarily, of course, but all such divisions are arbitrary) into regions:

Mid-Atlantic/New England: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE

Southeast: VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, FL

Mid South: AL, MS, LA, AR, TN, KY

Midwest/Great Lakes: MN, IA, MO, WI, IL, IN, MI, OH

Great Plains: ND, SD, NE, KS, OK

Southwest: TX, NM, AZ

Mountain West: ID, MT, WY, UT, CO

West Coast: WA, OR, CA

Based on these (again: admittedly arbitrary) regions, if you had to pick...

the two adjacent regions most alike

which two would it be??

I'm having a really hard time with some of your groupings but I'm going with it. There's just no good way to do it without having 30 different regions.

None of them are really that similar but as much as it pains me to say it, I guess I'd have to go with Midwest/Great Lakes and Great Plains. (Now I need a shower) But the vast majority of my experience in the Great Lakes region is in major cities. There are simply no comparisons in the Great Plains.

Unless Alaska can be considered it's own region and then I'd say it's most similar to the Mountain West.

Or Hawaii and the West Coast.

I would say the Northeast as a region is more similar than different (though I am not sure what the criteria is).
