Charleston has recently become the largest city in the state and has become a hot tourist destination. This has led to Charleston looking "down" on both Columbia and the Greenville-Spartanburg metros for not being the cool, hip new kid on the block. Columbia and the Upstate have always had a dislike for one another.

All 3 think they "run" the state. Columbia because it's the capital and home to the flagship university. Upstate because of business (especially BMW) and Clemson, and Charleston because it's destination city.

But we all know the real winner in the Palmetto State is none other than Myrtle Beach
Charleston has always thought it's the best thing since sliced bread; that's nothing new at all, new city population stats notwithstanding. There's still not really much real friction between it and the state's other metros. As far as Columbia and the Upstate, there's been some ribbing in recent years but not any real hostility. I wouldn't say the state's metros are the most cooperative but they aren't the most unfriendly towards each other either.

And even though the concept is somewhat subjective, USC is generally recognized as the state's flagship university so you weren't wrong to state as much: https://www.listchallenges.com/flags...-each-us-state

Only a state can designate a university the flagship university. It is isn't up to a newspaper in DC.

That isn't something that states do in any official capacity. However the oldest public university founded for the purpose of educating the students of the state and that gets the bulk of state funding is typically recognized as the flagship university of the state.

Some states do designate a flagship university as I understand it. Those states have at least one public university system.

The public universities in SC are independent of one another except the UofSC branch campuses.

LA and the Bay Area have big sports rivalries, but I don't think that we view each other as big rivals outside of that. LA dominated news and discussion 20 years ago, but that's evened out and maybe flipped since then. The Bay Area has controlled state politics for decades as our senators, governors, speakers, and other influential politicians tend to come from the Bay Area and LA doesn't seem to care.

Ah, I meant to click Florida and not Arizona. Wasn't paying attention.

Virginia has gotten better but there's still an interesting dynamic and some tension between NoVa and the rest of the state. I won't talk about how we only get 25 cents back for every tax dollar we send to Richmond. There's still deep philosophical differences about how the state is run and how people up here think it should be run (I also won't talk about how pathetic it is that Virginia insists on not putting more money into Metro which plays a large part in the NoVa economy and the little bit of money the state put towards it our local political representatives had to essentially beg for) but the issues are not nearly as pronounced as it was probably a decade ago.

I don't think Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are rivals.

If anything they are rivaling the remainder of the state which is largely rural and conservative.
