Your opinions are based on spurious claims. Maybe you have never lived in a city with a major university, but they are more than just closed off campuses restrcited to students, they are a part of the community providing a large array af amenities to residents and visitors alike: museums, concert halls, libraries, park-like surroundings with multiple recreational opportunities, even restaurants.
I live right near a university and on a weekly basis, touring Broadway productions and symphonic companies, ballet and other dance productions, etc. attract huge crowds of almost entirely community members with no formal association with the university. Add in sports, swimming, lecture series, and so on and a large university is a vital living component intertwined with the city that houses it. It is not some locked off ivory tower.
