Would False Creek in Vancouver BC count?
Milwaukee River in Milwuakee.
Does Ala Wai Channel in Honolulu count?
I would say no.

The towers near the water are mainly on the north shore of False Creek. The south is low rises.

You can certainly boat pass by high-rises around Vancouver, but not on both sides at once.

But, like Chicago, you can go from the river to Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is the most similar also with a narrow urban river that creates an urban canyon, but smaller buildings and different city.

I think the two are pretty unique and both are in the same region, so that's pretty interesting.

There is a riverwalk in San Antonio that also allows for some kayaking. It's pretty small and is less of of an urban canyon, but is still interesting.

I also recommend doing a Lake/River tour. Some are just the River tour. But some go into Lake Michigan also for full Skyline views and like being on a ocean. Many times cooler on the Lake so be prepared.

I'm sure that many Chicagoans who own riverside lofts and other condos along the river in the Third Ward agree with you. It has been a popular location to buy, especially for Chicago area boat owners who can't find any space in the marinas along the Chicagoland shore line.

that whole "the river running through downtown" thing is but just one of the parallels between Milwaukee and Chicago. And for all the (rightful) talk here about Chicago and its summer offerings, Chicagoans are well aware that our neighbors to the north offer their own fine array of summer attractions.......with Summerfest being at the top of the list, but with many more than just that.

You could take the ferry from SF to Tiburon (with the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, and Angel Island in site) then stop off at Sam’s and have a drink or eat on their outdoor deck while admiring the view of SF before heading back.

In NYC you can have drinks and seafood/oysters on Grand Banks—a docked historical ship that overlooks the lower Manhattan skyline and across the River to NJ:

Miami has the water taxi that you can take from South Beach to Bayside Marketplace, catching a glimpse of some Uber wealthy estates on Star Island and the Venetian Islands along with the Miami skyline en route:
