For anyone who said "both", I can think of no place in the nation that is such a wonderful mix of city-oriented and nature-oriented than the Bay Area.
On the basis of how it looks alone, the Bay Area literally blows everything else out of the water in the mix of man made and natural beauty.
On the mainland perhaps, but you can make an argument for Los Angeles and San Diego as well. Oahu is actually the best example in the US. Town=Honolulu/Waikiki and Country=North Shore.
Another SoCal (Orange County) resident here. I voted for nature, but I also love having lots of amenities both within walking distance and a short drive away. I would hate living in the middle of a big city with no wilderness around, but I don't really want to be way out in the sticks either.

Agree...lived in Marin—my favorite place in 33 years of CA living....beautiful natural setting (mountains, forest, beach, deer, on the bay) just 15 minutes outside a world class cosmopolitan and sophisticated city.
Given a binary choice between nature and city life, I choose city every time given that I relate more with humans than inanimate objects (as scenic as they may be).

There is one city I can think of that combines both but you will have to head down to South America for Rio de Janeiro...mountains, forest, and ocean/beach right smack dab in the city.

There is no place that really has it all, so you pick and choose.
