SugarHazard, if you decide to delve deeper into Cary, NC, you might want to check out SAS. They are supposed to be a very progressive place, daycare on site, etc. and a big presence in Cary. When I lived in Raleigh for 15 years, the only news I distinctly remember about Cary is some restaurant polluting a neighborhood water supply and the town council or whatever had an aversion to color.
Beware of zealots anywhere you travel in (bible belt) NC though; we just give them a wide berth. Sad to say, it's still hard to get away from racism since ignorance abounds, but Asheville, Charlotte and the Raleigh area seem to be populated by a more educated bunch of people. NC is pretty and many people have discovered its beauty and are moving here in droves, so expect growing pains. All in all, not a bad place. Good luck!
