A tad past the two hour limit, Galena would serve as Chicago’s best bet. Hilly charming Galna was frozen in time when its river silted up and lost its commercial usage to the nearby Mississippi. Gal na is stepping ng back to the 1840s. DeSoto Hoel, beautifully preserved hosted a Lincoln Douglas debate. US Grant’s homecis on a hillside. Dontown is loaded with shops and restaurants (obviosly) and the hills to the west of downtown rise with an SF grade and an SF straightness

I didn't read through all of the thread, so I don't know if it has been said or not. If it has, then I will just second it!

I agree. I lived in the Inland Empire for 4 years and avoided San Bernardino. Riverside has some nice areas and Redlands is a cute town with a Main Street type small downtown.

There are a number of places you can drive out of a city in a certain direction and keep off the interstate, and nearly all towns are nice.

Northwest from Chicago
Down the Mississipp from Minneapolis
Into Kentucky from Cincinnati
Southwest from St. Louis
Northeast from Detroit
Southwest from Fort Worth
Any direction from Pittsburgh
Across northern New Jersey from New York
To the Finger Lakes from Buffalo
