My friends/siblings have come to the conclusion that living in NYC is abnormal. However we are warned by people that other areas are "racist" or "conservative" whatever despite the fact that Philly has more black people than here. Meanwhile we are being screwed over on COL in the Bronx and Brooklyn where we were born and raised and it really sucks because IDGAF (and my friends don't care) about museums, nightclubs, culture (I can watch foreign language shows on my computer) as well as the things people in NYC value. I just need a place to go during the day and a place to sleep at night, and I don't need special foods.

We're a diverse group looking to pay as little as possible in rent for a group, preferably under 400 dollars a month. Our careers range from a doctor to permanently unemployed SSI people. I work in accounting. We're willing to garden on some level to save money on food. The areas we are looking at are socioeconomically and culturally similar to NYC neighborhoods like West Farms, Morrisania, Bridgeport, Philly areas like Fairhill, meaning an average income of less than 30K. I consider places like Hartford and Philly to be basically NYC with the same price points so I'm looking further afield.

I am comfortable being around crackheads and fiends and living in a mobile home. I am not comfortable with straight piping waste directly into the ground.

The cities we are looking at are within the range of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, or any 2nd and 3rd tier city. We're trying to drive there from the Bronx within a few days so no 20 day driving distance places. My main concern is availability of jobs, access to affordable stores (Dollar Tree, Family Dollar) and the size of the apartment / house. I don't care if it's really cold or really hot.

I do not care about hospitals and the police, as long as the police don't try to kill me. I don't have any diseases and fire can be handled with fire extinguishers.

You can score some options closer afield than the Midwest which also allow for longer growing seasons. Check out Petersburg VA (25 miles south of Richmond, Oxford NC (30 miles to Durham) and Florence SC (possibly self-sustainable for work).

You might not have to leave the state. An example of this: https://www.localsyr.com/local-news-...nd-population/

Indianapolis and Cincinnati were actually the first two I was going to suggest. Maybe also Nashville.

If you're looking for something even smaller, Grand Rapids MI is suppose to be incredibly affordable.
