Choices in NY are NJ, PA, CT, MA, VT -

Gotta pick VT with MA a close second.

I prefer the cooler New England climate and terrain of Western MA and VT, more than PA or NJ, and don't want to be too close to the coastal megalopolis of Bos-Wash.

If it includes Canadian Provinces, I would pick Ontario over Quebec, mainly due to preferring English over French-speaking areas - still would like to keep VT first overall, but Canada is tempting.

There must have been some serious volcanic activity in Hawaii that I wasn't aware of . Or did someone finally get their wish that California finally had the big one and floated off into the ocean?

I live in Southern Oregon, so the border states are Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada.

Nevada is completely off the list, don't like the gambling culture that seems to pervade everything (even grocery stores) and Las Vegas is pretty much my idea of hell on earth. Reno is too dry and windy.

Washington is off the list, although it has beautiful places to visit in the summer, because the winters are dark and rainy enough here in Southern Oregon. Daylight at the winter solstice in Seattle is 8 hours 20 minutes, it is about 45 minutes more here.

Idaho, like Washington, is beautiful in the summer (particularly the panhandle and near Galena Pass), but there is a reason my favorite places to camp have 20' tall snow poles along the highway. I always liked downtown Boise, but it has been at least 20 years since I spent any time there, I am sure it has changed.

California is probably the "if I have to" pick, although never in one of the big, crowded cities. Chico was actually on the list of potential retirement places at one time. Outside Sacramento somewhere, maybe.

But I'd rather stay where I am in Oregon, despite some of the problems here the trade-offs make it worthwhile.

I was gonna say Hawaii too for California regardless of the ocean separating us. Much of California can relate to Hawaii better than it can with Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona. I can tell you that San Diego has more in common with Honolulu than it does with either Portland, Las Vegas, or Phoenix.

Living in NC currently. I'd pick VA: slightly better climate IMO.
I'd be happy in all four of our neighboring states, though, depending on the exact location.
