Pittsburghers were all giddy when our first location of The Container Store opened, too. To this day I still don’t understand the fascination with it, and I’m a fabulous gay guy.
We’re getting a second Wahlburger’s but still don’t have a first Shake Shack. Even Lexington, KY has a Shake Shack.
We have three Whole Foods, three Trader Joe’s, and two Dave & Busters. We have one Fogo de Chao, one IKEA, one Top Golf, and three Apple Stores. I think we only have one Lacoste.
Has Primark had a large national impact yet? How about Warby Parker? We have a few Tesla dealerships. Are those considered a sign you’ve “arrived What about a Carvana car vending machine? We have one of those.
I saw that Fogo de Chao going up a few trips to PGH ago and was surprised. That has to be the best restaurant you can get. San Diego is lucky to have that downtown and a similar place called Rei do Gado a few blocks away.
One that you missed is the Pittsburgh Improv, a respected national chain of comedy clubs. Also-Sephora in Shadyside, Orangetheory Fitness on the east side.
I guess you don't know SF very well, everyone in the Bay and Sacramento knows Philz Coffee as well as they know Apple or Tesla.
As far as Echo & Rig, the trend has just started Vegas 1st, Sacramento 2nd, there's probably one being planned in SoCal by now.
I’m not sure I’d go that far seeing there’s only 1 each in both Sacramento and Davis. I have family in Sacramento that never goes to SF these days, why would they know it? I’ll make sure to ask them if they drive across town for a cup of Philz though. And for whatever it’s worth I was last in SF in the spring of ‘16, and have been there probably a dozen or more times in my life, mostly as an adult. Philz Coffee was never anything I took away from my trip. Who knows, I may have had it seeing I drink coffee out when traveling?
And again, the title of the thread is “What sought after big brand chains indicate a city/metro has arrivedâ€. Sorry, but a coffeehouse from San Francisco that’s in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento, along with Chicago and D.C. is hardly a big brand. It’s laughable to suggest it’s in the same league recognition wise as Tesla, Apple, and Whole Foods. A two city steakhouse isn’t going to be known to really anyone outside of those cities, and probably most living there don’t even know the name.

No clue where we got the idea that Philz is a big deal.
There's one in a random office building on the border of Santa Ana and Costa Mesa. I went inside and guess what-they had coffee and pastries.
Apple has a good footprint in the US, but a lot of metro areas that are good size do not have one yet.
For example, here in Tennessee, Chattanooga (metro 575k) does not have an Apple store yet, and neither does Clarksville (metro 285k).
Chattanooga's shopping is underserved. There's not even a Chipotle smh...Both Clarksville and Chattanooga only have one mall each and lack open air shopping and outlet stores. With Tanger building in Nashville, I don't see any outlets popping up in either city. Many people from Chattanooga go to Atlanta or Nashville for better shopping.
OP,
Echo & Rig is a high end Steakhouse Restaurant that you can add to your list including others that have been mentioned such as Telsa, Apple, Whole Foods, and Philz Coffee.
Only 2 Echo & Rig’s in the U.S. - Las Vegas and Sacramento.
You can add the Kimpton Brand Hotels to your list - it's one of the original Hip Boutique Hotel Chains, based in San Francisco. Started out in mostly West Coast cities, Sacramento, Los Angeles, etc.
Philz is long time San Francisco coffee place with many locations in NorCal including Sacramento, a few in SoCal now.
I agree with you, as a city adds these higher end places means they are expanding their upper class, Sacramento is a good example of this as it has all the locations on your list minus three of them including the ones I've added to the list.
These are all great adds! I've never heard of Echo & Rig's--I'll look them up.
It definitely does mean a city is becoming a huge destination for not only people who have a lot of disposable income, but adds diversity with destination attractions and vibrancy to a city.

That's so bizarre, that Chipotle is not in Chattanooga. I think Chipotle's salmonella issue 2 years back seriously thwarted their growth, but they are slowly expanding again. There are many in metro Nashville, some in Memphis metro, and metro Knoxville though.
As far as underserved retail in Chattanooga, yeah, seems to be a bit. Hamilton Place Mall area has a ton of great shopping, and then downtown has done a great job of luring good retail, trendy restaurants, bars, coffee shops. But Chattanooga could use a new upscale shopping center near downtown focusing on stores like Trader Joe's, Apple Store, Chipotle and other similiar....
I also missed the memo where Philz Coffee is now mentioned with the likes of Whole Foods, Apple, and Tesla?
Yeah I know, Coffee brands are super trendy these days lol. Philz is the current goldenboy.
Blue Bottle is another extremely well reputed olcal brand that will likely see it's way into SoCal if it hasnt already.
Anyhow, Nespresso feels like exclusive boutique and is only found in the most upscale locations in the country. I think the entire Bay Area only has 3 or 4.

Speaking of Nashville...
Their shopping options have come a long way within the last 3 years.
