If you're not nervous about walking a couple of blocks of Bourbon Street in New Orleans at 3 am, you're either drunk or crazy or both. That applies to anyone of any skin tone.
The same applies to Memphis and Beale Street for that matter.
It's still there which is of course ridiculous but explains the evolution of Arlington VA neighborhoods like Courthouse and Clarendon which while urban in feel, are very white and somewhat uptight.

If you knew anything about DC and the transformation of these neighborhoods mentioned which are minutes away across the river from DC, you would totally get the reference.
The smaller Massachusetts cities are nowhere as bad as the smaller cities in Connecticut and New Jersey.
Ehh. Some of the Massachusetts cities are pretty bad. Crime wise many are worse than those cities-just lower homicide rates. People 100% avoid Brockton New Bedford Fitchburg Lowell Springfield/Holyoke and to a lesser extent Worcester Fall River and Lowell. And regardless of how 'bad' they are -people avoid them to varying levels.

I don't get "afraid" of certain urban cores due to crime, it's moreso the "intimidation factor" of traffic, crowds, lack of parking, excessive rip-off parking prices, poorly called out one-way roads, etc. In other words, how easy is a downtown to navigate. I love the Twin cities for this reason. I could leave my home in the suburbs, do a reverse commute during afternoon rush hour, and be parked for a Twins game for $5, all in 30 minutes time. It was simple.....
Undesirable but not 'bad'; definitely shouldnt be grouped with Camden, but neither should Waterbury really..Waterbury is worse than Schenec though.
I dont know that people avoid Schenectady so much as there is no reason and nothing to do there. Its also a very small city of 65k, not sure why it was included in that list tbh
You can always tell the suburban people who take the commuter rail (or "the Purple Line" as they call it) into Boston. They look so different with the Can I Speak to the Manager haircut, sport jerseys etc. Plus they still have very strong New England accents, including young people. Mostly in town for games/partying so they can be pretty irritating to the locals. I don't think they are "scared" of the city but its very clear they bumpkins in from the countryside for a night out.
