It should be noted that Shreveport in not among the safest cities, but is among the worst 50, or 17%, out of nearly 300.

Not surprised about Detroit, sadly.

Is it just me or has Memphis been steadily climbing the rankings lately? Is violent crime actually up there or does it just not have the same circumstances that are leading to reduced crime in, e.g. St. Louis and Detroit (like gentrification and diffusion of poor people into wealthier suburbs)?

Also, wow, I did not think of Springfield, IL as being a high-crime city at all, but it's right up there with New Haven and Shreveport.

And Springfield, MO? There has to be something up there, like the local legislature recently redefined some kind of crime based on incidents at the university (or started recording more incidents because of an increased police presence).

Lansing, MI.....is kind of surprising to me. Flint, Michigan recently fell below 100,000....otherwise it would be in the top 5. Saginaw, Michigan, for a long stretch of years, had the highest violent crime rate in the country, but its population is now below 50,000. I think Saginaw has improved the last several years.

The Midwest has some pretty nasty urban areas in regards to crime....especially considering that the cold weather tames things a bit in the winter months, with the exception of around holidays.

I doubt those numbers are anything close to accurate since much of violent crime goes unreported.

Definitely some cities within the top 20 that are surprises to me: Albuquerque, Anchorage, Indianapolis, Wichita and Nashville.

Not surprised at the top three for sure, people are leaving Birmingham to push farther south into Shelby county, and residents are moving out of Memphis to farther east even to Fayette, and many places across the line into norther MS. I know these areas very well, and I know I would not advise anyone to live in these Dem controlled, poorly run cities for too many reasons to list, but chief among them would be simply awful public schools.

I second this and to be honest, I think this information is for one year and not over a period of time. Lansing has some violent crime, but in the top 25? Maybe a year here and there, but not on a regular basis.
