Me and my husband plan on moving this summer from DC to Seattle. Right now we are looking around at our options. Can anyone share any insights on moving cross-country? We have to drive because we have two cats, and I refuse to make them fly for that long period of time. We have only have a "1 bedroom" to move, so not that much stuff - but enough that we dont really want to sell it and start all over.
Also, can anyone suggest the best routs to drive? We have obviously looked at googlemaps, but there are several ways to get there and wondering if anyone had experience with that as well.
We drove half way across the country from LA to Saint Louis.
We took our time and stopped where ever there was something neat to see, and tried to east at local (not franchises) along the way.
To save money we also used Microtels. The rooms were very small, but comfortable and are much cheaper than even Super 8s.
To move, we used a Door to Door storage. This is a service where you pack containers and they do the shipping. I think every large metro area has a variation this service. It saved us at least $7,000 on the move. Its also less taxing that driving a uHaul across country.

I second how great Microtels are.
An amazing difference for the price between a Microtel and Super 8 or Red Roof Inn, etc. Very clean, well appointed and breakfast is included. They're also pet friendly!
