The title is pretty self explanatory, but honestly which city other than NYC has the most going on?

Out of the cities I've been too I'd have to go with Los Angeles and then Chicago in second.

LA has more going on but it's party locations are much more spread out than Chicago's though. In Chicago you can walk, take a cab, or train it from one place to another.

After those two I'd have to go with San Francisco.

LA has some good nightclubs and cultural attractions but it's downtown is pretty pathetic overall. It's getting better but still has a long ways to go.

I agree with you, LA is on the same level pretty much as Chicago, but the things of interest are pretty spread out there so you need to do alot of driving.

As far as vibrant downtowns with lots of street activity and cultural institutions:

1. Chicago
2. San Francisco
3. Boston
4. Seattle
5. Los Angeles - the downtown core is relatively small, most ped activity is in outlying areas.
6. Portland
7. Atlanta

Personally, I'd choose either San Francisco or Los Angeles. In SF, EVERYTHING is within walking or BART distance. In Los Angeles, however, you'd need a car to get around; still, there's tons of things to do in LA.

You know, one city I forgot to list was Philly, it is relatively unappreciated on this site, but it has tons to do especially Center City, Chinatown, Society Hill and Old city neighborhoods. I would probably raank it close to Chicago overall for the criteria I mentioned.

It's a shame Philly wasn't thought of. It's downtown would destroy at least half the cities on the list. It's the 3rd largest downtown in population, so you can expect it to be a pretty damn vibrant place.

I thought your list was just being subjective.....for whatever reason..... since it also excluded some other clear winners like DC, Miami and Las Vegas. Also a city can have a big nightlife with no culture, or the other way around. Just sticking to your list I would go with L.A. even though the excitement isn't downtown but on the Westside.
