Maybe Akron, Ohio. But a lot depends on which road you go through on. Cheyenne, Wyoming, is pretty ugly. And what I've seen of El Paso.

Smaller towns, it seems they are mostly in the desert.

Yuma AZ
Douglas AZ
El Centro CA
Needles CA
Blythe CA
Barstow CA
Lordsburg NM
Espanola NM

I love the desert southwest, in its natural beauty. There seems to be a real, real problem, though, when humans attempt to settle it, when it comes to layout/design and appeal. Maybe it's because people weren't really meant to inhabit it, I don't know.

Additionally, the inhabitants of these towns are mostly transient people, which causes a bunch of social problems. These are towns that are mostly along interstates (save Espanola) and are there primarily to service long distance travelers, mostly in the form of truckers. There is no real continuity to these places, and the amount of drifters/transients is correspondingly high.
