I agree that life seemed less complicated then and materialistic. People just seemed more satisfied with what they had and didn't keep up with the Joneses as much. Those who were so inclined, probably moved for better economic opportunities, as I grew up in Western PA and it seemed like those who were inclined to move, moved to CA when it was more affordable.

I have worked hard to keep that "old time community" feel in my area. But the Yuppies and Yucans and whatever bubbleheads move down have ruined it. The greedy tax assessor may be the final straw that forces me out.

1987 - We sold the 1978 house for $42,500.

By the way this was in 1960 and my dad had an annual income of 5,876.00. The house they purchased (15,560) was within the 3X income rule. Oh and back then the homes and schools were BRAND NEW and crime was non-existant. The same homes, 46 years and many termites and hurricanes later are selling for 400,000+. I would laugh more if it wasn't so sick!

I love those old ads.My real estate boards officehas a lot of them on the walls. You could buy 50 acres for about $40,000.

And they were so much nicer than the trash they cram in today! Oh and better in the hurricanes than you would think!

Best of all was the poured concrete roof of the "florida room" and the concrete side door overhangs. The homes not "remodeled" still look great today!
