Colorado seems more Southwest to me but better identified as the Mountain West.

Texas doesn't quite fit in the Southwest or the Southeast [just too big]. Maybe West Gulf Coast would be a better description.

*observing with good humor* My other half is from Colorado too, and she definitely agrees with you on this! She is also adament that Texas is NOT part of the "true" West. I agree with her on that too!

The "too big" notation about Texas is very apt in terms of it being too damn big to be either Southwestern or Southeastern. Now, if East Texas were carved off to stand alone, it would fit comfortably into the latter. Just as if the trans-pecos (ala' El Paso and Big Bend areas) and parts of South Texas nowdays (with the heavy hispanic influence ) were sliced off, it could easily be part of the former.

The broad middle? "Western South" is how I would classify it. That is to say, essentially Southern in terms of history and culture, yet containing many independent qualities of the post-bellum "West".

I currently exist in the upper midwest; my life is in the northeast.

Well i put southeast but really there is no accurate choice for the south which lies west of the mississippi river. I just don't feel like we are eastern ( maybe to someone on the west coast lol). The southeastern states are really nicer to me than this area I live is. Outside of history there isn't much connection.

"really there is no accurate choice for the south which lies west of the mississippi river. "

West of the MS river? You mean east?
