I think the USA could learn alot from Sweden and alot of other countries about walking, and other means of getting around. There are so many places in the USA that are completely car dependent and not pedestrian friendly at all. I envy you that Sweden and so much of Europe is walkable. I can understand your missing that aspect of life there. Here in Portland, Oregon thankfully you can walk alot of places or use transit, but not many smaller cities in the USA like this. Unfortunately one has to climb over so many homeless and drug sellers and users on these streets to take that walk.

Our area (Papillion) has been enforcing sidewalks in all residential areas, neighborhood connectivity to the parks, walking trail connectivity between parks, and walking trail interconnectivity... so you can leave your house and move all thru town, but also use the system to move around the broader metro (Omaha). The metro trail system is then being interconnected East across the Missouri River with a Pedestrian Bridge so you can cross into Iowa (http://www.inhf.org/iowatrails/index.htm - broken link) and hook onto their trail system. You can also go West and traverse across Nebraska (http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/programs/trailplan/03bCHAPTER.pdf - broken link).
