I'm interested in seeing what event or time of year is the quintessential time to visit your city. Being originally from New York City, I would say New Years. Even if you're not up for the Ball Drop at Times Square, the whole city is partying like no place on earth. Since I now live in Austin, I would say South by Southwest as the epitome of what the Live Music Capital of the World is famous for. I understand that you may not personally think it is the best time to visit due to crowds, drunk people, etc. What I am looking for is that classic yearly event.
For Albuquerque, I would say Fall. The weather is cooling off, there's a crisp feel to it however it is not too cold. The leaves are beginning to change. And the Balloon Fiesta in late October is in full form as it is the largest ballooning event in the world. Even if you are not into watching hot-air balloons, it's quite a site to see.
For Rapid City, I'd say early August. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is in town, so is the Central States Fair, and summer is in full action in the Black Hills.
