Depends on where you are in New England. Not every area gets a lot of humidity. The further north, the better. And the OP said he didn't mind harsh winters.

I used to a fair bit of amateur astronomy and the best stuff to be found in the northern hemisphere has best visibility in the winter time. Maybe the OP has plans to build large telescope with a digital sensor and automated controls so he can sit a nice warm room with the scope out in the cold. That'd be nice and certainly not out of some people's expense range if they're really really into it!
