I've been reading and posting on city-data for a few months and was wondering what effect this site has on others' opinions of where they live.
Overall, the site seems to make me feel less positive about my city (Richmond, VA). Not just because of the criticisms in the General US forum (criticisms that are sometimes well deserved) but also because of the attitudes and opinion in the Richmond forum.
The site seems to emphasize how incompatible my city and I are (or at least others from my city posting on this site).
Anyone else experienced this?

The posters on here give good advice in many cases, but if you liked your city before, what you read on city-data shouldn't change that. Your experiences are the ones that matter, not the experiences of strangers on the internet.

It's been a mixed bag for me; I've seen some people say some really nice things about San Diegan's and some really bad things too that I never really noticed or felt before; mainly things based off stereotypes that you wouldn't even notice unless you were looking for them. If anything it's made me defend this place more so, especially from Northern Californians with their BS anti-SoCal mindset, and love and appreciate it more too.

City data made me very feel very confident in my move from Vegas to St. Louis. So far all of the advice I received in the St. Louis and Missouri forum has held up. I have been excited about the move and would have been more apprehensive without the advice.

Oh, and to answer the actual question, I just don't let it affect me. Everyone has different tastes, and that's a GOOD thing. If we all had the same tastes, there would be a bit of a crowding problem.

Worse. Little Rock, AR is hardly mentioned on city-data and when it is its in a negative way. It has really shown me the perception most people have of Little Rock. While some of its true, its largely overexaggerated. Still, that perception is why Little Rock doesn't have the ability to attract the ameneties and growth that similar sized cities like Des Moines and Baton Rouge are able to do, and it also explains why we have such a HORRIFIC suburban sprawl problem for our size.

Well... LA gets dogged on here on a regular basis! Usually I just ignore most of it, but sometimes it gets to me. When it does, I just look out the window and feel better!

Neither really I just use it as another source of information. There does seem to be a nice community here but, as with any other internet forum, you have to take the good with the bad.

Personally the posts here have only strengthend my opinions about where I live. I don't let negativity rub off on me.
