where i live the native americans do not work becuase they get a stipend from thier casinos (mohegan, foxwoods) and tend to spend it all on booze and more gambling. Their minority is notorious for alcoholism and gambling addiction. The high school graduation rate is below 25% for native americans in the area too. Not a pretty site and unfortunately they are not well liked in the area.
As a black person with native american ancestry, I too am fascinated with their culture. I feel bad about what happened to their ancestors but they are strong willed and am honored to call them my brothers and sisters.
What??? What??? Native Americans were forced onto reservations and forced to assimilate. They had misguided Christian missionaries "converting " them from their "heathen" and "savage" ways. They finally accomplished their goal by removing their "Indian-ness" and crushing their entire culture. Music, Art, and some Native languages that have been lost forever. I suggest you read the book, "500 Nations" and re-learn some of the totally incomplete history you were taught in school. Oh, and greedy? Look up what the government did in New York when they violated a treaty to put in the Kinzua Dam. And even if they were greedy, they had VERY good teachers. BTW, $1 is a small price to pay to go on "their" land(as you put it). I think they got less than that for Manhattan.
You know, I just don't care.
Get over it. My ancestors were "forced" to do a lot of things they didn't really want to-- like build this country for pennies a day. Italian and Irish immigrants who did things that are illegal to make humans do now.
I don't like the tolerance that's been squandered on a conquered civilization. In the history of human civilization, the conquered loses and assimilates. Concessions to the extent of bizarre land grants and the threat of losing land to more "casino" building ventures is exasperating.
With that said, I run into some native Americans here and there in my day. They're usually as apathetic concerning their ancestors' past as I am about mine.

Exactly! Thank you. We can all agree that a lot of horrible injustice was done, but if one country was going to "owe" another for atrocities of the past, then every corner, nook and cranie of the world would owe someone else.

You got it, unfortunatly this is the way many live today that choose to stay with their people, most reservations real ones are pretty bad, the ones that got out and actually made a good life are lucky, you think the ghetto is bad you ain't seen nuttin, the real world is not oh i have a neighbor who is american indian, it's a shame to see such great people of history as such, the american indians deserve much much better.

Semi-valid points - except, recall what I think are two very important aspects to this discussion:
1. The Native Americans had umpteen various different treaties, signed in legal agreements between two parties, and for the most part were not honoured - instead reforced, time and time again, to yet more undesirable lands, under threat of death [of course, many died along the various trails taken too...].
2. The immigrants were indeed harshly put to work, as you said for very minimum wages [if any], working in squalid unhealthy & unsafe conditions - yet [and this is very big difference IMHO between these people and the Native Americans] they had, for the most part, immigrated to this country of their own free will.
Me, I have much respect for any/all civilizations - love the difference and richness of the cultures, the languages, the beliefs, the manners, etc. of 'em all. However, I can not get past the pain when seeing peoples giving up, no matter the battle, and not trying to improve their lot, collectively and/or individually. I am proud to have Native American, English, German, and Scots-Irish blood coursing through my veins.

As to the OP's question: Native Americans are my people...Choctaw/Creek to be exact.
