Exactly, it's SO OBVIOUS that the only reason Chicago would build that ugly piece of garbage is to keep the Title of world's largest building. I know I'm probably going to get the usual "New Yorkers are arrogant" attack statements but even you Chicagoans know deep down inside that thing is HORRIBLE. For the record, not that I'm saying the Freedom Tower is the most beautiful (my favorite will always be the empire state building and crysler building) but it is the true definition of edgy (not ugly) and the meaning alone makes it more relevant than that eye soar you call The Spire.
PS: Before I even read the comments I posted my feelings and after I realized that most people agreed. It looks like a *****.
How you perceive the aesthetics of the Spire is one thing-- but I hardly believe the reason it was proposed is solely because of pride. The project was loosely stated to cost $2B. I don't think there's a line in the equity agreement listing pride as a source of collateral.
Anyway, the project is on hold now. Hopefully it will be revived.
Maybe it will look better when aqua, and Waldorf-Astoria are complete. I also think trump will help it fit in a little.
Exactly. In order to appreciate The Spire you have to look at the whole future skyline. By itself from some of the photos The Spire looks wierd and even downright ugly. I do not even like the nighttime photos of it.
However The Spire even with the other new buildings does seem to diminish (make smaller and less significant) the existing Chicago skyline. This is actually what some people used to say about The World Trade Center and Downtown NY btw (fortunately the Freedom tower is an improvement).
We also have to remember that the photos may not be doing either building justice (neither The Spire or the Freedom Tower actually look real in the photos). The Spire is the big roll of the dice here and may turn out to be a complete disaster - "The mistake on the lake" lol. Or it might be yet another "okay" supertall like The Sears or John Hancock buildings.
Still there is a chance, just a chance it might turn out to be Chicago's Eiffel tower, the elusive symbol that she so richly deserves.

Just a chance? It would instantly become a symbol of Chicago. It's not just another supertall, it's almost TWICE as tall as Hancock. I think it would really define the city.
I'm not saying that in any way to do with New York or that it would make Chicago better than NYC blah blah blah, I'm just saying that only focusing on Chicago, the Spire would really dominate the city....especially because it would be brand new.
I would've really liked to have seen a more creative design for the Freedom Tower. Something with a little more edge. I like its height but the building is not anything new. I think the base (with the parks and shops, etc) is more interesting than the actual building.
The Spire is a risky building, and could turn out to be a horrible building. But atleast it took the risk.
