I agree that Lake Tahoe is fun. It is beautiful with the lake there and all the activites going on. Mammoth Mountain south of Tahoe is great also, but a little isolated from a major airport.
Vail, Colorado is a great resort town and the prices are down during summer.

Cherokee, NC in the East.

Gatlinburg only if you like driving through what looks like a fair midway gone bad.

If you do go to East Tennessee/Smoky Mountains, bypass Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge all together.

Unless of course you DO like the touristy stuff.

Estes Park, Colorado is my favorite. Summit County in Colorado is also a good summer spot for me. I didn't find Gatliburg to be that bad compared to Pigeon Forge and Sieverville concerning touristy stuff.

I agree with Steve-o about Gatlinburg, TN. I liked that town when I was there. It's in a very beautiful location and there's plenty of stuff to do.

I also like Park City, Utah.
