Hi... I am thinking of buying a house in NJ with propane heat. I've had oil, electric and natural gas in the homes that I have lived in, but never propane.

A few questions:

1. Is propane more or less expensive?
2. I know that propane is explosive. Any issues with that?

Bear in mind Propane is derived from Oil. That could present a problem if an acute oil shortage exists. Conversely, the USA has something like 500 years worth of natural gas in the ground at current and projected levels of usage.

1) Usually more expensive than Natural Gas.
2) No more than you had with Natural Gas. They have the additive in Propane so you can smell it just like in Natural Gas. Overall it is very close to Natural Gas except you have to remember that the tanks have to be filled like Fuel Oil heat and not direct line from the supply like Natural Gas.
