After living a majority of my life in resort/destination towns, my favorite place to vacation is anyplace that the locals have to look up what the definition of "tourist" is.
Winter skiing and especially New Year's Eve in South Lake Tahoe is hella fun. You got one of the most scenic and clear alpine lakes in the country, something like a dozen or more ski resorts to choose from, don't stop selling booze on the NV side, AND they have Casinos! It's like a mini, Vegas ski resort w/o the trashiness of Reno.
This list is pretty limited. Where is Hawaii? Southern CA beach towns? Other Florida beach destinations? Pacific Northwest? Alaska? There are too many beautiful places in the US
For myself, I really liked Park City when I was there. It's a very cool and neat town with bunches of historical buildings, plus tons of restaurants and shopping. Also, for skiing, it has Deer Valley and Park City Resort, which are both awesome!

Yeah, I know I just went by what Wikipedia said are resort towns. There are just too many to list!
Coastal Maine is my favorite place so far. I'd like to visit more of the Great Lake's areas in the near future. I've been impressed with what I've seen of them so far. Mackinaw City sounds really nice... or is it Mackinaw Island? Whichever one has no cars.

Mackinaw Island has no cars. Well except for emergency vehicles, but I have only seen them once in MANY, MANY trips over to the island. They had it out washing it one morning.
