San Jose is 50 miles from SF and is NOT part of the SF TV/media market. The reality of the situation is if SF gets to include the areas of the entire Bay area then Philadlephia would have about 10 M people in that same geographic sphere of influence.
.
Where are you getting SJ is not part of the SF Bay Area TV market? Do you actually have any knowledge of that or are just assuming it? The same network stations in SJ are the same ones in SF, Oakland, and every other part of the Bay Area. When the the old NBC affiliate (KRON) in SF lost it's contract with NBC it switched to one based in San Jose, which the whole Bay Area got. Every single news station in the Bay Area says "San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose".
And how would Philly be 10 million? Trenton and Princeton have 5 million people there? maybe if you took some of NYC's suburbs....
Pretty sure its impossible for London to be the best city. That list is probably really shoddy at best. There are probably at least fifty cities in the US that are as good or better than London. Terrible list.

Name them (I'm not saying your're right or wrong but this could lead to an interesting disscussion.)

The Bay Area is 7.4 M sq.miles
Metro Philadlephia-Wilmington-Camden metro is 4.6 M sq miles
Lancaster,Reading,Trenton,Allentown Atlantic City,Dover De. could be included in Phillys metro if it were given The Bay Areas geographic parameters.Putting Philly close to 10 M without touching metro NYC. Philaldephia would then be slightly bigger area wise than the Bay Area.
I dont have alot of faith in the policies or lack-there-of on how metroes are determined. Mercer County NJ included in NYC metro is a complete joke. Chicago dallas,Houston,DC/Bal metro areas are all approximately 11 million sq miles gobbling up every pmsa within 100 miles of the core yet Philadelphia somehow get centralized to a 1/2-1/3 of those metroes eventhough it has plenty of satellite communities outside the metro.
Oh, and SF is a far better city than Philly. End of discussion.
SF is extremely gifted geographically. It probably has the best natural setting in the country and 2nd in N America behind Vancouver. Oceanfront, land area, large Bay, valley, mountains.Thats a nice setup and tough for any area to beat. On geographic merit alone SF should be a better city than Philaldephia and every other city in the country for that matter.
That being said this thread isnt about My boat is better than your boat. Its about global economic influence concerning defined msa's.
SF had its day in the 60's and has litle influence now compared to southern california. But then even california has started to lose its influence in the last ten years as other states have started to be come more economically important. With its budget crisis it will have a hard time in the coming years.Any stae that can't run its business will becoime less desireable to have a industry or company in .
Global economic influence. Amsterdam on no. 10, Rotterdam not on the list. Headquarters of Nationale Nederlanden, Unilever, biggest harbour in Europe (think of a company like Shell) don't count? Peculiar list.
