Anyone with experience visiting/living in the North versus the South, what is your opinion regarding safety and crime in cities in the North (NYC, Philly, DC, Baltimore, etc) versus cities in the South (Atlanta, Miami, Memphis, Charleston, Birmingham, etc)?

Here in DC, for example, crime is generally restricted in the ghetto (Southeast), where no white people venture into. Is crime more random in the South? Where have you felt safer? Northern or Southern big cities?

<Sigh> So if no "white people" venture into the "ghetto" does that mean crime doesn't happen??? Just like if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound??? There are a couple of things wrong with that statement, but I'm not gonna touch it any further. Crime happens in all cities. Typically where the poor parts are. Ergo, the cities with the most poor parts will typically have the most crime.

I would say the North simply because it is more densely populated.

Why are people so obsessed with crime?

Because they all want to be notorious and it gives them some sense of "badassness" by saying you're from a dangerous city.

They prolly have NO idea what its like to fear walking to the train everyday or taking the wrong turn into a neighborhood.

My cousins in st. louis have to be careful where they drive. Crime is serious, especially when you've experienced it first hand. It is NOT cool when your brother gets shot just for being at the wrong time walking to class in south Chicago. ITS BULL****. And makes me sad that people are obsessed with it.

I would assume that the OP would like to move but doesn't want to be in a crime ridden area.

I would say concerned rather than obsessed. People rather live than die. Sure, the likelihood of unprovoked violent crime with a deadly outcome is small. However, crime affect quality of living indirectly too.

People should be concerned with crime.

But...it is always talked about on this forum.
And...I can't imagine anyone thinking it's cool to live in a city known for crime.
And...while St. Louis does have areas more susceptible to crime. Don't go there if you don't have to and if you do, be smart.

I have lived in a number of big cities and can honestly say that they are all dangerous if you are not aware of your surroundings. How can anyone compare danger of north vs south when even statistics are iffy.

Want to live crime free....move to a rural area and enjoy the commute to work
