I've been to Denver more times than I can remember so I know how to get around and I know where the hotspots are. San Francisco is just TOO EXPENSIVE so I think I've narrowed it down to Portland and Denver.

Gawd! I just need to play "eeney meeney minney moe".

Well if you're thinking of actually living there after college then maybe go with what's cheaper?

Portland has the ocean, being a "green" city, mostly whites, further form family

Denver has snow, more diverse, closer to home.

I'd go with Denver for college and Portland to live. Maybe that'll help.

University of Denver is the best choice of the places listed- all three cities are nice (SF the most impressive as a city), but the uofd is the best school of the choices and will afford you the best chance to have a college experience. That trumps location considerations IMO. Avoid the art school.

People are jealous of California's cities? That's a hilarious statement if I ever heard one.

To the OP. Be practical and choose the location that will best facilitate your education and career following college, provided that it offers affordable living costs and possibly some job opportunities while you are in school. Will you have a car? If not, then you'll have to see which mass transit system works best for where you will be living and then going to school.

My choice would be Denver.

From City-Data:

Races in Denver:

White Non-Hispanic (51.9%)
Hispanic (31.7%)
Other race (15.6%)
Black (11.1%)
Two or more races (3.7%)
American Indian (2.2%)
Vietnamese (0.8%)

This is actually old data. Denver is now officially majority minority, by 50.01%. (google it)

Races in Portland:

White Non-Hispanic (75.5%)
Hispanic (6.8%)
Black (6.6%)
Two or more races (4.1%)
Other race (3.5%)
American Indian (2.3%)
Vietnamese (2.0%)
Chinese (1.4%)
Other Asian (1.3%)
Filipino (0.5%)
Japanese (0.5%)

I'd go with Denver. I think the culture, climate, etc will be similar enough to SD that you won't suffer extreme culture shock, yet different enough that you will expand your horizons a bit. Also, it will be a lot easier to get "home" from, which will be important at Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, etc. I agree with vegaspilgrim: choose DU instead of UCD, for all the reasons he gave. The DU area is really neat, IMO, and close enough to downtown.

All three are great cities, but I'd personally go with San Francisco - it has the big city amenities I need. Do think the other two are great cities though.

If you're planning a move to Portland, just want to let you know that PSU is a pretty crappy university. If you're planning on a liberal arts degree, and you can either afford private college tuition, or you have a scholarship, then I would suggest Reed College or Lewis and Clark. Also, having been to all three cities, I would go in this order: San Francisco, Portland, then Denver. The only reason I would choose Portland over SF would be due to cost of living. Denver, meh, not really my cup of tea.
