As an Australian These are Places i suggest.
-Melbourne - In the CBD, go to the Casino and Melbourne Central and lots of places to eat etc.
-Sydney - There are no words to describe it.

Our family visited Sydney and the surrounding area in Summer of 2007. Back then the US dollar was a lot stronger. It is an amazing trip and Sydney is one of the best cities probably in the world. My teenagers had a total blast also and loved everything about the city. My middle son even has a dream of one day living there. Sydney is a must do in Australia. Also, take a trip out to the Blue Mountains, spend some time at the beach, see the kangaroos, tour the Olympic site, and explore the great downtown.

We were going to go to Queensland for the beach part of the vacation, but got scared away by jellyfish (I didn't want to risk it with the kids). I had us go to Fiji instead, which we really enjoyed. We didn't get to see the rest of Australia due to the trip being combined with New Zealand and Fiji also, so we got a small taste of a great country. Have a ton of fun though.

A good place to stay in Sydney for a group would be the Quay West Suites in the CBD. It has amazing water views and kitchens and everything you need to enjoy your stay. Our room fit five people so it is good for groups or larger families. I believe some rooms slept up to 8.

I use tripadvisor.com for travel. I think you will find it very useful.
