After seeing the LA vs. Africa thread I figured I could post one between San Diego vs. Japan. I chose Japan because after living in San Diego for 10 years, I've been living in Japan for 6 months and I'm a lot happier here. The quality of life is overall better, even though I traded off the weather. The cost of living is higher and is more crowded, but there's lots to do around here. I live just outside of Tokyo in the Kanagawa Prefecture. Like in California, you're close to the beach and mountains, and you have the vast city of Tokyo as well as Yokohama nearby. One major difference is people are polite and friendly, as the Japanese have a reputation for.

well it's not really fair comparing one city to a whole country/continent(la vs. africa). Japan is actually a very good country with an amazing economy, and a very high standard of living....so this kinda hard. I think i'd take Japan ..learning a new language never hurt anybody

Japan, far and away. Friendlier, cleaner, better scenery, cooler cars, cool PT (can anyone say "bullet trains"???), better economy, cheaper COL, better nightlife, etc... And Tokyo is amazing, far more interesting and alive than San Diego ever will be.

Since I'm a fan of anime, I choose Japan. I'm not particularly fond of San Diego, and what ever it is, I'm sure I'd like Japan better even if I couldn't speak the language.

Default San Diego vs Japan

Oh this is way too easy for me to answer. I voted for Japan and I'd go live in Japan any day. I visited Japan before as well.

The people are VERY polite and helpful. The country is so super clean. And I would feel safer in Japan compared to San Diego. Japanese way of life and culture is so different that it would take me too long to explain.

This is hard to answer....I lived in Japan for 9 months back in 2000. I taught English in Sendai. I really liked Japan and actually went to Tokyo a few times..very intense city but fun. I lived in a teeny tiny apartment the likes of which I had never seen before. I did not care for the weather it was actually a downgrade from Vancouver. I had a lot of fun there but I got homesick and missed N.American culture and I left three months before my contract ended. At this time in my life I would say San Diego. I am looking for nice mild weather and I don't really feel like living somewhere where I don't speak the language. I have small kids now so as much as I like Japan,it isn't even a possibility.

Hell i voted japan, i love san diego and all because i was born their but it lacks so many things that a major city should have well san diego not that much of a major city but its one of the top 10 biggest cities in the U.S. I guess you can thank los angeles for depriving everthing from san diego.

Japan easily, it has culture, an economy, an educated populace, low crime, great people. San diego has........... a nice zoo?
