I went down to Panama City for spring break, my first time being down there. Here are a few differences I noticed from MI:

-WAFFLE HOUSES...They are everywhere. I think there are possibly more than McDonalds! (none up here)
-Accents, of course, I was expecting this.
-Met a lot of southerners, I asked a few if we had an accent, and they all said we carry out our O's. Interesting.
-People in Panama City were waaay friendly, I had mixed results from Gas stations in Georgia and Alabama.
-The Sand is red...why is this?
-Much more interesting Hills/Landscapes than up here on the freeway.
-Prepay gas pumps...sooooo annoying.
-65 MPH Freeways...Lame.
-No bottle deposit, which is actually a good thing as you buy many more than you return.

Overall I didn't really go through many big cities...Nashville, Birmingham, and around Atlanta but not downtown. But Panama City was beautiful.

Any thoughts?

65 mph freeways? It's 55 and 50 here.

Ohio has waffle houses, 65 mph interstates, prepay gas pumps, and lacks a bottle deposit. Seems many of your observations are not southern-specific.

Indiana has waffle houses, 70mph interstates, prepay gas pumps but it also has bottle deposits two. I know this has nothing to do with the south but I was just adding my 2 cents

Did someone ask you what church you went to (joke)? Here's a link to GA Red Clay. How would you rate the ATL area friendly factor?

You can't go to one city in the south and go "Oh! So this is what all of the South is like!"

I agree that many of these observations are pretty broad and not really region-specific, although I admit that I think of Waffle Houses as a Southern thing. That and ready availability of sweet tea. We used to say that we lived just south of the "sweet tea line."

Not many Waffle Houses in this region. I've never been to one actually. We just got our first one a few years ago here. Rural interstate speed limit is now 70 mph in Kentucky.

How did you go through Nashville, Birmingham, AND Atlanta on your way to Panama City from Michigan? Or did you go down one way and back up another way?

The speed limit through Tennessee is 70mph, not 65. Same in Georgia and Alabama. And if you go only 70mph through Birmingham you'll be run off the road.

Waffle House is AWESOME.
