Seen TONS lately; I see older adults driving them on very busy streets here in NoVA-Dangerous- on roads SUVs go 45-50 mph. It looks like a lot of poorer people are trying to save gas on the moped but its just not safe on most major roads here. Now if they drove motorcycles,which can accelerate, I would not think it would be as dangerous.

i have actually seen a increase of gas guzzlers, and hybrids on the road

Yes, more Scooters are on the road now and I've even seen a moped or two though they still don't seem as popular yet as they were in the late 70's and early 80's.
