It blew my mind when I found out that some people pronounce "rang" like "rahng" (like cat or ran) instead of "rayng" (like rain) the way we say it in Oregon. Same thing when people say don't say leg like "layg" or egg like "ayg" but rather with an "eh" like net or vet.

And for the OP, I was born and raised in Oregon and cot/caught sound the same as well as don/dawn and Mary/merry/marry.

I'm from NC. I say cot and caught differently. Cot is caht and caught is cawt. (The aw sound sounding like all, only without the L's.) Don and Dawn are the same, as are Mary, marry and merry. Pin and pen, tin and ten are also pronounced the same.

Sorry, dude. I'm from the Philadelphia region.

Some of us cannot detect the differance in the sounds. My mother was always trying to get me to pronounce Don and dawn differantly. I could not hear the differance. I still can't.

I am the same with cot and caught. Perhaps if I worked at it I could speak them differantly...but why bother ???
If I say, "I caught a cold", nobody would think, " I cot a cold' !
If I said,"I am going to lay on the cot", nobody would think I was going to, "lay on the caught' !

I do notice when the announcers on Missouri TV ( espacially the females) cannot pronounce the short 'e' sound, and say the short 'a' sound instead. Like ....if they say "pet", it comes out "pat".

I pronounce cot and caught differently, I mean c'mon, they are different words (yes I realize that much of the country does not). I also pronounce Merry and Mary, and Erin and Aaron differently too.

I'm from Chicago too, but a lot of my relatives are from the east-coast, so I've picked up a few of their bad habits I suppose when it comes to the 'merry/mary' thing.
